I don't know how much of the final ME2 was his idea. They didn't plan but Drew's vision for ME2 and forward was decent. It's all up to having authors in play who can have their vision strongly developed, like David Gaider or Drew Karpyshyn. People also say "Make a plan!" for Star Wars but in truth the original trilogy didn't really have a plan either. Honestly, I think when LOST got controversial in 2010 BioWare realized like "Holy shit, this can backfire!" it's a very similar situation, as is Game of Thrones except both LOST and Mass Effect are based on nothing in particular, and both claimed to have a plan going forward when they didn't. They just had a high-level doc with some basic ideas for each game, and Casey liked to go public and say "this is a trilogy we've planned from the start." I actually put together a video two days ago where I put the Leaked Script's dialogue over the ending, which I think is Mac Walters's earlier draft (not the first draft, but maybe the first that had recordings. In the ending they didn't, so it's solely the result of Mac Walters writing and Casey then editing it. Mass Effect 3 generally had a questionable plot, but the earlier parts work for the most part, and that had to be because the other writers kept going "No, what is this? This doesn't make sense, how about THIS?" to each other. Only the "leads" were in charge of the ending, and they were clearly out of touch whenever they weren't reviewed by their fellow writers.
Mass Effect was the product of 8 writers, many more designers and many programmers and engineers. That's why it was so extremely disingenuous how everyone just swallowed up the whole "Artistic integrity" defense. I don't think his tenure as GM was affected as much by his creative demeanor, but I just got the impression that Casey is a bit of a "Fake it Till You Make It" guy, and that maybe he just isn't suitable as GM, honestly.īut yes, the ME3 thing is Takyris from Penny Arcade, AKA Patrick Weekes (you can go search his name, there's still posts up to 2011) who said that unlike every other piece of content in the game, they weren't involved in the process of reviewing and editing the ending and were only shown what Casey and Mac had created after everything had been produced.
